DEATH IN BUENOS AIRES

In Buenos Aires, expressions of death span from the horrific to the grossly ostentatious.

At 3:30 every Thursday afternoon, the few remaining Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo march in front of the Casa Rosada (the Pink Palace where Evita didn’t cry).  Their children were among the 30,000 Desaparecidos (“The Disappeared”) murdered by Argentina’s military junta between 1976 and 1983.  Wearing white cloths on their heads symbolizing their children’s nappies, they still seek answers.

La Recoleta Cemetery contains 4,691 final homes to many of the country’s wealthy and famous.  Some are still being used while others are in disrepair.  Excess turned into a tourist attraction.
